Loving Where You Live (Even If It’s Not Your Dream Home)

So many of us walk around with the idea of a dream home in our minds - the perfect layout, the perfect kitchen, the perfect backyard, the perfect timing. And while dreaming can be fun, it can also quietly steal our joy if we let it.

Here’s the truth most people don’t talk about:
There is no such thing as a perfect home.

Homes, like life, are lived in. They’re layered with seasons, memories, imperfections, and change. And while some homes fit us better than others, loving where you live has far less to do with perfection - and far more to do with presence.

If you’re not in your “dream home” right now, this is for you.

Redefining the Idea of a Dream Home

A dream home isn’t necessarily:

  • Bigger

  • Newer

  • Trendier

  • Or picture-perfect

A dream home is one that supports your life, your rhythm, and your season.

It’s a place where you feel safe. Where you exhale. Where you can be yourself. Where life - in all its beauty and mess - happens.

Sometimes the dream isn’t the house itself, but:

  • The mornings you create there

  • The relationships nurtured inside its walls

  • The routines that ground you

  • The memories unfolding over time

How to Love Where You Live - Right Now

1. Focus on How Your Home Serves You

Instead of noticing what your home isn’t, try noticing what it is.

Does it provide:

  • Safety?

  • Shelter?

  • A place to rest?

  • A place to gather?

  • A place to grow?

Gratitude shifts the energy of a space faster than any renovation ever could.

2. Create One Space That Feels Like You

You don’t have to love every inch of your home to love living there.

Start small:

  • A cozy chair by the window

  • A peaceful bedroom

  • A clutter-free kitchen corner

  • A front porch you enjoy sitting on

When even one space feels aligned, it has a ripple effect throughout the home.

Go Slow:

When we bought our home that was built and stuck in the early 90s, I was the only one that could see what it could become. Yes, we did a big renovation before we moved in, but you can go slow. Since that big renovation, I have picked one area or one home project to focus on for the year - my husband loves this about me (he does not).

Pick one project to do a year that makes your home feel like the home your heart wants.

3. Let Go of Comparison

Social media has made it incredibly easy to feel like everyone else has it figured out - the perfect home, the perfect style, the perfect life.

But comparison disconnects us from our own rhythm.

Your home doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s. It needs to reflect you - your values, your life, your season.

4. Live From Your Heart, Not the Checklist

A home filled with love, laughter, rest, and connection will always feel better than a home filled with pressure to “get it right.”

Light the candle.
Cook the meal.
Invite the friends.
Rest when you’re tired.
Celebrate small moments.

A home comes alive when it’s lived in - not when it’s finished.

5. Honor This Season

Not every home is a forever home - and that’s okay.

Some homes are:

  • Healing homes

  • Transition homes

  • Growth homes

  • Launching pads for the next chapter

There is beauty in honoring where you are, even if you know you won’t stay forever.

You don’t have to rush through this season to get to the next one.

6. Remember: You Make the Home

The energy of a home doesn’t come from its square footage or finishes.

It comes from:

  • The way you move through it

  • The way you care for yourself and others inside it

  • The way you show up, day after day

A home filled with intention, presence, and love will always feel richer than one chasing perfection.

You don’t need a perfect home to live a beautiful life.

You need a place where your heart feels supported, your nervous system can settle, and your life can unfold - imperfectly, authentically, and fully.

And when the time comes for a new home, you’ll move forward not from lack or frustration, but from clarity and trust. And I will be here to help.

Until then, love where you live.
Live from your heart.
And let your home meet you right where you are.
