Stay Cool…
Soak Up Summer - Safely!
There's no denying it - summer in Texas is hot! While the sunshine invites us outside to enjoy the river, the lake, neighborhood pools, hiking trails, and backyard barbecues, it's important to take care of ourselves in the heat so we can enjoy every moment.
One of the best parts about living in Central Texas is that we're surrounded by so many great ways to cool off. Whether you're spending the day at your neighborhood pool, floating the river, visiting a local watering hole like Blue Hole or Jacob's Well, or relaxing at the lake, there's no shortage of ways to enjoy the outdoors while beating the heat.
Here are a few simple ways to stay safe while making the most of your Texas summer:
☀️ Hydrate before you're thirsty. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, and if you're spending extended time outdoors or exercising, replenish electrolytes as well.
🧢 Dress for the weather. Lightweight, light-colored clothing, a wide-brim hat, and sunglasses can help keep you cooler and protect you from the sun.
🌳 Plan around the heat. Whenever possible, schedule walks, hikes, yard work, or outdoor adventures in the early morning or later in the evening when temperatures are lower.
🧴 Don't skip the sunscreen. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and reapply every two hours - or more often if you're swimming or sweating.
💦 Take cooling breaks. Whether you're at the pool, floating the river, or exploring one of our beautiful local parks, don't forget to seek shade or air conditioning throughout the day.
❤️ Listen to your body. If you begin feeling dizzy, nauseated, overly fatigued, or develop a headache, get out of the heat immediately, hydrate, and rest. Heat exhaustion can happen quickly during a Texas summer.
One of my favorite things about living in Central Texas is that there are so many fun ways to cool off. Whether you're spending the day at your neighborhood pool, floating the crystal-clear San Marcos River, making a splash at Schlitterbahn Waterpark in New Braunfels, enjoying an indoor escape at Kalahari Indoor Water Park, relaxing at Blue Hole Regional Park in Wimberley, or spending the afternoon at Rio Vista Park or San Marcos City Park, there are plenty of places to beat the Texas heat and enjoy the outdoors. Just remember to pack plenty of water, wear sunscreen, and take breaks in the shade!
And if you're anything like me and tend to get frequent migraines - especially during these hot Texas summers - sometimes water alone just isn't enough. In a pinch, one of my favorite ways to recover is scheduling an at-home IV with Lone Star IV Medics. They come to you, so you can relax on your couch while receiving fluids and nutrients to help you recover from dehydration or a migraine without ever leaving home.
Summer is meant for making memories - lazy afternoons by the water, backyard dinners with friends, evening walks, and weekends exploring everything the Texas Hill Country has to offer. Stay hydrated, slow down during the hottest part of the day, and enjoy every bit of this beautiful season safely.
Here's to a fun, healthy, and hydrated Texas summer!
